Asking where someone is from
A very useful question is:
Woher kommst du? = Where are you from?
This is a common question when you meet someone new.
You can also ask in a formal way:
Woher kommen Sie? = Where are you from?
Answering the question
A simple answer is:
Ich komme aus … = I come from …
Examples:
Ich komme aus Deutschland. = I come from Germany.
Ich komme aus den USA. = I come from the USA.
Ich komme aus England. = I come from England.
Ich komme aus Spanien. = I come from Spain.
This is the easiest and most useful pattern to learn first.
Country names
Here are some common country names in German:
Deutschland = Germany
die USA = the USA
England = England
Kanada = Canada
Spanien = Spain
Frankreich = France
Italien = Italy
These country names are useful in beginner conversations.
A small grammar point
You already know that kommen means to come.
In this lesson, you see:
- ich komme = I come
- du kommst = you come
- Sie kommen = you come (formal)
Examples:
Woher kommst du?
Ich komme aus Kanada.
Woher kommen Sie?
Ich komme aus Frankreich.

Nationalities
You can also say your nationality.
Here are a few examples:
Ich bin Deutscher. = I am German.
Ich bin Deutsche. = I am German.
Ich bin Amerikaner. = I am American.
Ich bin Amerikanerin. = I am American.
Ich bin Engländer. = I am English.
Ich bin Engländerin. = I am English.
Notice that some nationality words change for men and women.
You do not need to memorize all of them yet.
A simple way to use this
These are two very useful beginner patterns:
Ich komme aus …
Ich bin …
Examples:
Ich komme aus Italien.
Ich bin Italiener.
Ich komme aus Kanada.
Ich bin Kanadierin.
The first pattern is easier, so focus on that one first.
