You have reached the end of the A1 course. That is a real milestone. At this point, you have learned how to introduce yourself, talk about your home and family, order food, shop, ask for directions, talk about health and weather, make plans, describe past events, and understand simple travel and hotel information.

German uses nicht and kein to make sentences negative.

Use Nicht

Use nicht to negate verbs, adjectives, or whole ideas.

Ich komme nicht.
I am not coming.

Das Zimmer ist nicht groß.
The room is not big.

Ich darf hier nicht parken.
I am not allowed to park here.

Use Kein

Use kein before nouns when you mean no or not a.

Ich habe kein Ticket.
I do not have a ticket.

Ich habe keine Zeit.
I do not have time.

Das ist kein Hotel.
That is not a hotel.

Part 5: Modal Verb Review

Modal verbs help you say what you can, want, must, may, or would like to do.

With modal verbs, the second verb usually goes at the end.

Ich möchte Deutsch lernen.
I would like to learn German.

Ich muss heute arbeiten.
I have to work today.

Ich darf hier nicht rauchen.
I am not allowed to smoke here.

Part 6: Separable Verb Review

You learned separable verbs like aufstehen, einkaufen, anrufen, and aufräumen.

In the present tense, the prefix often goes to the end.

Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
I get up at seven.

Ich kaufe heute ein.
I am going shopping today.

Ich rufe meine Mutter an.
I am calling my mother.

In the past, the ge often goes between the prefix and the verb.

Ich bin aufgestanden.
I got up.

Ich habe eingekauft.
I went shopping.

I called my mother.

Part 7: Past Tense Review

At A1, you learned four important ways to talk about the past.

1. War From Sein

Ich war krank.
I was sick.

Das Wetter war schön.
The weather was nice.

2. Hatte From Haben

Ich hatte Fieber.
I had a fever.

Wir hatten Spaß.
We had fun.

3. Haben + Past Participle

Use this for many everyday actions.

Ich habe eingekauft.
I went shopping.

Ich habe Musik gehört.
I listened to music.

Ich habe meine Mutter angerufen.
I called my mother.

4. Sein + Past Participle

Use this with many movement verbs.

Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
I went home.

Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren.
I went by train.

I arrived.

Hallo, ich heiße Sofia. Letztes Wochenende war ich in Hamburg. Ich bin mit dem Zug gefahren. Die Reise war kurz, aber schön.

Am Samstag habe ich meine Freundin besucht. Wir haben Kaffee getrunken und Musik gehört. Am Abend waren wir auf einer kleinen Party. Die Party war sehr schön, und wir hatten viel Spaß.

Am Sonntag war das Wetter schlecht. Es war kalt und windig. Ich hatte Kopfschmerzen und bin früh nach Hause gefahren. Heute geht es mir wieder gut.
