In this lesson, you’ll learn how to talk about languages in German. You’ll learn how to say which languages you speak and understand a few simple sentences about language.

Language words
Here are some useful language words:
Deutsch = German
Englisch = English
Spanisch = Spanish
Französisch = French
Italienisch = Italian
These words are important because you can use them right away in real conversations.
Talking about languages
A very useful phrase is:
Ich spreche … = I speak …
Examples:
Ich spreche Deutsch. = I speak German.
Ich spreche Englisch. = I speak English.
Ich spreche Spanisch. = I speak Spanish.
This is one of the most useful beginner sentence patterns in German.
Asking about languages
A common question is:
Sprichst du Englisch? = Do you speak English?
You can also ask in a formal way:
Sprechen Sie Englisch? = Do you speak English?
Examples:
Sprichst du Deutsch? = Do you speak German?
Sprechen Sie Englisch? = Do you speak English?
A small grammar point
You already know that sprechen means to speak.
In this lesson, you see:

- du sprichst = you speak
- Sie sprechen = you speak (formal)

One important thing to notice
sprechen is a little different from some other verbs.

- er spricht
The vowel changes in the du and er/sie/es forms.
For now, just notice these forms:

Simple example sentences
Ich spreche Englisch. = I speak English.
Du sprichst Deutsch. = You speak German.
Sie spricht Spanisch. = She speaks Spanish.
Wir sprechen Französisch. = We speak French.

Saying you only speak a little
A very useful beginner phrase is:
Ich spreche nur ein bisschen Deutsch. = I only speak a little German.
This is helpful when you are still learning and need patience from the other person.
