Lesson 34: At the Supermarket
In this lesson, you’ll learn useful German words and phrases for the supermarket. You’ll also practice ich brauche and ich kaufe so you can say what you need and what you buy.

Supermarket words
Here are some useful words for this lesson:

You do not need to memorize every word perfectly right away. Focus first on the ones you will use most: der Supermarkt, die Kasse, die Tüte, and das Regal.
Saying what you need
You already learned this useful phrase:
Ich brauche … = I need …
Examples:
Ich brauche Brot. = I need bread.
Ich brauche Milch. = I need milk.
Ich brauche Wasser. = I need water.
Ich brauche eine Tüte. = I need a bag.
Saying what you buy
Another useful supermarket verb is:
kaufen = to buy
Examples:
Ich kaufe Brot. = I buy bread.
Ich kaufe Milch. = I buy milk.
Ich kaufe Wasser. = I buy water.
Ich kaufe Käse. = I buy cheese.

kaufen is also regular, so the forms should look familiar.
Asking where something is
In a supermarket, you may need to ask where something is.
Use:
Wo ist … ? = Where is … ?
Examples:
Wo ist die Milch? = Where is the milk?
Wo ist das Brot? = Where is the bread?
Wo ist die Kasse? = Where is the checkout?
Wo ist das Regal? = Where is the shelf?
You can also use the formal question:
Wo finde ich … ? = Where do I find … ?
Examples:
Wo finde ich Milch? = Where do I find milk?
Wo finde ich Brot? = Where do I find bread?
This is a useful phrase, but for now, Wo ist … ? is easier.
A small grammar point: eine Tüte
You learned that German nouns use articles like der, die, and das.
die Tüte = the bag
When you say a bag, it becomes:
eine Tüte = a bag
Example:
Ich brauche eine Tüte. = I need a bag.
For now, learn this as one useful supermarket phrase.
