Lesson 36: Ordering at a Café or Restaurant
In this lesson, you’ll learn simple German phrases for ordering food and drinks in a café or restaurant. You’ll also practice polite requests with ich hätte gern and ich nehme.

Useful café and restaurant words

Start with the words you are most likely to use: die Speisekarte, der Kaffee, das Wasser and die Rechnung.
Asking for the menu
A simple phrase is:
Die Speisekarte, bitte. = The menu, please.
You can also say:
Kann ich die Speisekarte haben? = Can I have the menu?
For beginners, Die Speisekarte, bitte is easier and works well.
Ordering with ich hätte gern
A very useful polite phrase is:
Ich hätte gern … = I would like …
Examples:
Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee. = I would like a coffee.
Ich hätte gern einen Tee. = I would like a tea.
Ich hätte gern ein Wasser. = I would like a water.
Ich hätte gern einen Salat. = I would like a salad.
This phrase is polite and useful in restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and shops.
A small grammar point: einen Kaffee
You may notice:
der Kaffee → einen Kaffee
der Tee → einen Tee
der Salat → einen Salat
This happens because these are masculine nouns, and after phrases like ich hätte gern, ein often changes to einen.
For now, do not worry about the full grammar rule. Just learn the phrases as chunks:
- einen Kaffee
- einen Tee
- einen Salat
With das words, it stays ein:
das Wasser → ein Wasser
Example:
Ich hätte gern ein Wasser.
Ordering with ich nehme
You can also say:
Ich nehme … = I’ll take …
Examples:
Ich nehme einen Kaffee. = I’ll take a coffee.
Ich nehme ein Wasser. = I’ll take a water.
Ich nehme die Suppe. = I’ll take the soup.
Ich nehme den Kuchen. = I’ll take the cake.
Ich hätte gern … sounds a little more polite.
Ich nehme … is common and direct.

nehmen is irregular. The du and er / sie / es forms change:

Asking for the bill
At the end of the meal, you can say:
Die Rechnung, bitte. = The bill, please.
You can also ask:
Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? = Can I pay by card?
Kann ich bar zahlen? = Can I pay in cash?
You saw these in the last lesson, and they are very useful in cafés and restaurants too.
