Lesson 31: Irregular Verbs: sein, haben, sprechen, and fahren
In this lesson, you’ll learn four important irregular verbs in the present tense. These verbs are used all the time in German, but they do not follow the regular verb pattern perfectly.

What is an irregular verb?
A regular verb follows a predictable pattern.
Example:
lernen
- ich lerne
- du lernst
- er lernt
An irregular verb does not follow the pattern completely.
That does not mean it is impossible. It just means you need to learn the most common forms separately.
The verb sein
sein = to be
You already know this verb from many simple sentences.

Simple examples with sein
Ich bin Anna. = I am Anna.
Du bist müde. = You are tired.
Er ist hier. = He is here.

The verb haben
haben = to have
You use haben to talk about what someone has.

Simple examples with haben
Ich habe ein Buch. = I have a book.
Du hast Zeit. = You have time.
Sie hat Wasser. = She has water.

The verb sprechen
sprechen = to speak
This verb is irregular because the vowel changes in the du and er / sie / es forms.

Simple examples with sprechen
Ich spreche Englisch. = I speak English.
Du sprichst Deutsch. = You speak German.
Er spricht Spanisch. = He speaks Spanish.
Sprechen Sie Englisch? = Do you speak English?
The verb fahren
fahren = to drive / to go by vehicle
You can use fahren when talking about going by car, train, bus, or bike.

Ich fahre nach Berlin. = I am going to Berlin.

Wir fahren nach Hause. = We are going home.
A pattern to notice
Some irregular verbs change the vowel in the du and er / sie / es forms.
Examples:
sprechen

This is common in German. For now, just notice the pattern. You do not need to memorize every irregular verb yet.
