Useful food and drink words
Here are some common words for this lesson:

Eating and drinking
Two useful verbs are:
essen = to eat
trinken = to drink
Here are the ich forms:

Examples:
Ich esse Brot. = I eat bread.
Ich esse Käse. = I eat cheese.

These are simple, useful sentences.
Saying what you like
You already saw this pattern before:
Ich mag … = I like …
Examples:
Ich mag Kaffee. = I like coffee.
Ich mag Tee. = I like tea.
Ich mag Brot. = I like bread.
Ich mag Gemüse. = I like vegetables.
To say you do not like something, add nicht at the end.
Ich mag Kaffee nicht. = I do not like coffee.
Ich mag Fleisch nicht. = I do not like meat.
Saying what you need
A useful shopping phrase is:
Ich brauche … = I need …
Examples:
Ich brauche Brot. = I need bread.
Ich brauche Milch. = I need milk.
Ich brauche Wasser. = I need water.
This phrase will help in the next lessons when you talk about shopping.
A small grammar point: ein and einen
German changes some small words depending on how they are used in a sentence.
For now, notice this simple pattern:
Ich esse einen Apfel. = I eat an apple.
Ich trinke einen Kaffee. = I drink a coffee.
Why einen?
Because der Apfel and der Kaffee are masculine nouns, and in this kind of sentence, ein often changes to einen.
Do not worry about mastering this yet. Just remember these useful chunks:
- einen Apfel
- einen Kaffee
- einen Tee
- einen Saft
With many das and die words, ein or eine stays easier to recognize:
Ich esse ein Ei. = I eat an egg.
Ich esse eine Banane. = I eat a banana.

A few things to notice
trinken and brauchen are regular verbs. They follow patterns you already learned:

essen is irregular. The du and er / sie / es forms change:

mögen is also irregular. The ich and er / sie / es forms are:
- ich mag
- er mag
- sie mag
